One of my top priorities is safer communities both at home and throughout our state. As a Hayward City Councilmember, I continually worked for resources to support our local police to keep neighborhoods safe. As your State Assemblymember, I support police and fire services by opposing state raids on funds for local government.

As a senior Member of the Public Safety Committee, I am working to update and reform systems to improve our criminal justice system. For example, an October 2014 California State Auditor report highlighted the pressing need for California to more adequately track and report rape kits and recommended that law enforcement agencies report this information annually. In response to this report, I authored legislation which will require local law enforcement agencies to track and report on the number of rape kits they collect, test and decide not to test. For untested kits, law enforcement agencies will be required to document the reason for not submitting the kit to be tested. Law enforcement agencies will also be required to submit this information to the Department of Justice on an annual basis. AB 909 will bring justice to victims across the state whose perpetrators are able to walk freely because evidence is sitting in evidence rooms unanalyzed.
